A Fozzy Studio Update From The Duke!

From The Duke: February 9, 2012 -

I haven’t given a lot of Fozzy studio updates because I don’t want my enthusiasm to be interpreted as big headed gum bumping. For those who are interested in our progress, let me just start with a quick update.

Chris wrote the bulk of the lyrics months ago, but he has given me updated lyrics as I have needed them, some as recently as last week. I have been working on rough song ideas for last few months, some basic song structures were recorded out on the road last fall with a portable studio set up in the back lounge of the bus, and other ideas more crudely captured by the recorder in my phone. So far all the songs written for the album have been recorded in a rough demo form. Drums have been programmed, scratch guitars have been recorded, and a lot of the vocals have been “sketched” out.

For the last few weeks our Drummer Frank has been relentlessly rehearsing the new album material at our practice space in downtown Atlanta. Next week we officially move into the studio where we start tracking drums.

Now to the big headed gum bumping. Based on the songs and the early demos, my gut feeling is that when this album is completed, it will be the best overall album that I have been a part of.

It takes a lot of time and effort from so many people to make a record and then get it on to the shelves of your local music store. But all of us involved know that without the band’s supporters, making these records wouldn’t even be possible. So for that gift, we are so grateful, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Rich Ward Steps Down As The Guitarist In Adrenaline Mob

When I was first asked about coming on board as the 2nd guitarist for the Adrenaline Mob project, it was understood that every member of the band had other band commitments, most of us having multiple active music projects. We all acknowledged that it would be a challenge to make it work, but we all agreed that the lineup’s potential was worth making the necessary compromises in each of our schedules. In recent months it was made clear that after the release of the band’s album, scheduling around my previous commitments wasn’t going to be possible, and that it would be necessary to make Adrenaline Mob my sole priority.

This basically meant that if I was to move forward with the Adrenaline Mob guys, I would only be available to continue on recording and touring with Fozzy, Stuck Mojo, and Walking With Kings, when the AMOB wasn’t working. That’s a commitment I just couldn’t make. So, I contacted Mike Portnoy, and told him that I would need to step down and allow the band to find a guy who has the ability to fully commit to the project the way they need him to. His response was gracious and completely understanding.

The experience of playing in a band with Portnoy was amazing. I’ve never met a more passionate, committed musician all my years, and always a complete gentlemen towards me. Playing with musicians of that calibre was an honor and a privilege, I hope they go on to the great things they deserve.

Interview: Rich ‘The Duke’ Ward – Fozzy (10/11/11)

The Duke Of Metal & Overall Nice Guy.

During their recent European tour which saw Fozzy hit North Wales for the first time in the bands history, we had a nice cosy chat with their lead guitarist – none other than Rich Ward, about how things are going in the Fozzy camp, their rockin’ set at this years Sonisphere Festival and what lies ahead in 2012.

Sean: Hey Rich, so how’s the tour going so far?
Rich: Great, great. Today’s the halfway point, everybody’s healthy, everyone’s doing great. No-one’s punched each other and there’s been no crazy drunken debauchery, it’s just been good rock and roll. The band’s been playing really well, crowds have been good and everyone kept telling us that the economy’s been mad and that attendance has been down, but we haven’t seen it, it’s been great for us. Knock on wood! Life’s been good.

Sean: So, how’s the crowd/fans taken to Fozzy this year?
Rich: It’s good, you know it’s our fourth time back on the same record (2010′s ‘Chasing The Grail‘) to the UK. So what we thought we would do on this tour was to hit smaller markets that we hadn’t hit in the past, like playing here in Wrexham (for the first time). So we’re doing these smaller towns and it’s good because you know how it is, the only thing you do when you come to the UK is play Cardiff, London, Manchester and Glasgow. A lot of the fans won’t have an opportunity or it’s going to be much more expensive for them because they’ll have to travel so we’re trying to do all these markets that we haven’t hit before and meet some new folks!

Rich Ward Interviewed By RockSins.com!

We recently had a chance to catch up with Rich Ward from Fozzy, Stuck Mojo, Adrenaline Mob and Walking With Kings at a recent Fozzy show in Glasgow. We spoke about different crowds in different locations, why not to listen to Trivium when you’re writing an album and Rich goal for the end of 2012.

Rocksins: This is the 4th time you guys have been here since the album (Chasing The Grail) came out, what’s the difference between European crowds and North American crowds?
Rich Ward: The crowds are pretty much the same all over the world in general, but then you get places like Glasgow where the fans are amazing. There are pockets, we’ll play in Manchester and the crowds are hot, and when we play in Melbourne, Australia the crowds are hot. There’s certain places that are just up for it, I don’t know it there’s something in the water, but they are up for it on any given day. Also, playing in the states… The States is big! Playing in Las Vegas, playing in New York and playing in New Orleans is completely different. But I’m going to say, in general, working class towns tend to be a little more fun to play, because if you are playing L.A., New York or London… They get awesome gigs every night. If you open up a paper in New York, you could find three killer bands playing every night. It’s amazing, but… I’ll relate it to sex, if you could have a different beautiful lady every night, even that would get boring after a while. There’s a certain excitement when a band comes to a working class town where they don’t always get the best bands every night. It becomes a little bit special to them and they appreciate it more.

Rocksins: How do Fozzy gigs differ to Adrenaline Mob or Stuck Mojo Shows?
Rich Ward: Fozzy and Stuck Mojo shows are similar because the approach is the same, heavy riffs, heavy music, and the in between song banter has a little bit more of a party vibe. Adrenaline Mob is more serious. Fozzy and Stuck Mojo’s attitude has always been a backyard barbecue party for a few hundred or thousand of our favourite friends.

Rocksins: You’re in 3 bands right now, are there any more that we don’t know about?
Rich Ward: Actually, I have another project called Walking With Kings. My goal is, by the end of 2012 I wanna be in 100 bands. If you are reading this and you have a band and want me to play, contact me. I need to be in 100 bands by the end of next year.

Rocksins: Is it hard balancing your time between so many projects?
Rich Ward: It’s hard, it’s very hard. You always end up having to make a sacrifice. Fozzy is my number 1 band right now, I imagine it must be what a paligamist feels like.

Rocksins: You’re in bands with some huge stars, do you ever feel overshadowed by the likes of Chris Jericho and Mike Portnoy?
Rich Ward: Not at all. Do you follow wrestling? I am the best in the world at what I do! I know that these guys respect me, they wouldn’t have me in their bands if they didn’t think so. I was a little nervous about joining Adrenaline Mob, Mike is a really big star in the drumming world and I didn’t know what to expect. I’d met him a few times and he was a really nice guy, but I didn’t know what it would be like to be in a band with him, but he turned out to be a really cool guy, the same way Chris is. I had a lot of offers to play in other bands, some really big bands, over the years and I turned them down because I knew the reputation of the guys in the band.

Rich’s latest project, Walking With Kings is about to take flight. Here’s an update from Lead Singer, Terry Chism!

“First, an update on the WWK album… We’re still in production mode. There are some guitar parts that still need to be sorted, but on the most part, recording has been completed. We will be releasing more tracks as we near the full release date.

Now for the HOT news… We are shooting our “Leap of Faith” video on Saturday, September 24th. We had our final production meeting last week and everything is in line for an amazing shoot. Special thanks to Scott Haney, producer and professional videographer, for everything he is doing to make this video a real success. I’d also like to thank Travis Stoker, for working closely with Scott to design and engineer the proper lighting and visual effects. It’s great to have such dedication and talent in the WWK family. Reviews of “My Kung Fu Is Good”

In early 2005, performing under the stage name “The Duke”, Rich Ward released My Kung Fu is Good, his debut solo album with Spitfire Records, which grew from demos he had recorded the previous year and performances at the Atlantis Music Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

The album received positive reviews, with Billboard magazine stating, “Evolution and growth that exceeds most of the rock acts currently cluttering the airwaves.”
